Supporting service members. The Alaska Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) recently honored Alaska District for its commitment to supporting USPS employee service members.
Operations Support Acting Manager Tim Bruno and Labor Relations Specialist Peter Neagle accepted the award on the Postal Service’s behalf at a ceremony in Anchorage.
The ESGR is a Defense Department program established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve component service members and their civilian employers.
Old dog, new trick. The Paper, a California weekly publication, recently chronicled the real-life adventures of Owney, the canine who rode U.S. Mail trains in the late 19th century.
In 1888, Owney was a stray puppy who wandered into the Albany, NY, Post Office looking for a warm place to sleep.
The dog took an instant liking to the mailbags piled high inside the building, and the postal workers took an instant liking to Owney. Before long, he was accompanying the mail by train.
The Paper’s history lesson includes the 2011 Owney stamp, noting it allows the pup to “still travel throughout the land … along the mailbags that he forever loved.”
