Scanning, flag and federal budget updates

Scanning
Western was the area leader in scanning during the week ending May 19, while Dakotas finished first among the districts.

Scanning snapshot. The Postal Service’s national scanning rating was 97.82 percent during the week ending May 19, up from one week earlier.

Dakotas (99.21 percent) topped the districts, while Western (98.2 percent) led the areas.

To see the latest results, go to the Enterprise Analytics site and select “Scanning” on the left hand side, and then “DES 2 — Scan Performance” from the drop-down options.

2018 federal budget. The U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released a proposed 2018 budget for the federal government May 23.

Here’s an update from the Postal Service:

We are still analyzing the proposed budget to determine what impact it might have on the Postal Service and our employees in the event it becomes law. In that regard, it is important to note that the release of the president’s proposed budget is just the first step in the annual budgetary process. Ultimately, the budget must be passed by Congress, and at this point, there is much work to be done before this budget proposal becomes law. That said, we do appreciate that the president’s proposed 2018 budget recognizes the need to enact postal legislative and regulatory reform. Both are essential to enabling the Postal Service to meet its obligations in a financially sustainable manner. The Postal Service looks forward to continuing to work with the administration and with Congress to enact postal reform legislation.

Flag reminder. Memorial Day is Monday, May 29. Postal facilities that are open on the holiday must fly the U.S. flag at half-staff. The POW-MIA flag must fly below the U.S. flag.

The U.S. flag must be flown at half-staff from sunrise — or the hour when it’s raised — until noon. Then, hoist the flag to the peak of the staff, where it either must fly until the time of closing or no later than sunset (unless the flag is lighted).

Facilities that fly the flag at all times and are closed on Memorial Day should lower the flag to half-staff when the facility closes prior to the holiday. Return the flag to full staff when the facility opens Tuesday, May 30.
