The Postal Service has released a 1-minute video showing highlights from the recent Robert Panara stamp dedication in Rochester, NY.
Panara, a pioneer in the field of deaf studies, became the 16th entry in the Distinguished Americans stamp series last month.
“Robert was famous for his ability to establish immediate rapport with his students through his fluid, graceful use of sign language described by many as ‘sculptures in the air,’” Chief Operating Officer David Williams says in the video.
The video also features comments from other speakers at the ceremony, including Gerard Buckley, president of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and Harry Lang, a Panara biographer.
“People began learning more about deaf culture and American Sign Language. That changed many of our lives, and Bob was part of that,” Lang says.
