A controlled burn on a prairie near Bowman, ND, recently got out of control, threatening a postal customer’s home.
Rural Carrier Stacey Scott encountered the encroaching blaze as she was delivering mail and got no answer at the front door, so she called the customer’s mobile phone. She learned that the homeowner was traveling, but a relative was possibly inside.
Scott called 911 and tried the front door again, this time getting a response from the relative, who came outside to fight the fire until emergency responders arrived.
“Without her quick thinking, this situation could have had even more serious consequences,” said Postmaster Jason Hirst. “We are very proud of Stacey and her dedication to her job and customers.”
