The Postal Service has released a stamp to mark the 150th anniversary of Nebraska’s statehood.
The stamp highlights an image from the banks of the Platte River as sandhill cranes fly overhead at sunset — a spectacle unique to the Cornhusker State. The image was taken by award-winning conservation photographer Michael Forsberg.
“Michael Forsberg’s stunning sandhill crane photograph captures just a small glimpse of Nebraska’s natural beauty. It’s something everyone should experience,” said Information Technology VP Jeffrey Johnson, a Nebraska native who dedicated the stamp at a March 1 ceremony in Lincoln.
The dedication also featured Gov. Pete Ricketts, first lady Susanne Shore and Sara Crook, chairperson of the Nebraska Sesquicentennial Commission.
“It’s hard to imagine an image that truly embodies Nebraska’s immense beauty more than one depicting the famed sandhill cranes flying into the Nebraska sunset over the glowing Platte River,” Ricketts said.
A stamp celebrating Indiana’s statehood was released in 2016. A Mississippi Statehood stamp is planned later this year.
