While delivering mail to a Hayward, CA, customer recently, Letter Carrier Eric Brooks heard a faint voice inside the house.
Brooks knew the 87-year-old resident was recovering from double-hip replacement surgery and called out to him.
The customer told Brooks he had fallen down the stairs. His wife, who was gardening in the backyard, couldn’t hear his calls.
Brooks found the man’s wife, called 911 and waited with the couple until responders arrived.
The customer was taken to the hospital, where he learned no bones were broken in the fall.
“People should always be able to ask their [letter carriers] for help,” said Brooks.
