Letter Carrier Mark Heighington was delivering mail to an apartment building in Hempstead, NY, last year when he noticed smoke in the hallway, the first sign of a five-alarm fire that took firefighters two hours to bring under control. He ran through the building, knocking on doors to alert residents, one of whom was asleep and may not have survived if not for the carrier’s “fearless act,” said Postmaster Kevin Rynne. He added that Heighington was recently recognized by the building’s co-op board for his heroism.
