The Postal Service will honor one of the world’s most iconic fashion designers when it releases its Oscar de la Renta stamps Feb. 16.
For 50 years, de la Renta (1932-2014) created glamorous, sophisticated clothes that showcased the distinctively feminine attributes of the women who wore them.
His innovative designs and close attention to detail elevated American style and brought international attention to New York City as a world leader in fashion.
De la Renta, a native of the Dominican Republic, arrived in New York in 1963 after previously working for some of the biggest names in European fashion.
He mingled just as confidently with the socialites of New York as he had with their counterparts in Paris and Madrid and sought to create both the day and evening wear that powerful and influential women desired.
The Oscar de la Renta pane features 11 stamps: a black-and-white portrait of the designer and 10 stamps that showcase details from some of his most famous gowns.
The stamps will be available at usps.com and Post Offices nationwide.
