USPS employees are continuing to restore service in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, which has caused major flooding throughout the Southeast.
Most facilities that were closed after the storm have now reopened, although some sites remain shuttered in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. In these communities, retail and delivery operations have been moved to alternate sites.
Gulf Atlantic District Manager David Martin said employees have been “working to restore Post Office operations for [affected areas] as soon as possible.”
In North Carolina, the Postal Service has set up a special phone number for customers in flooded areas who have questions about mail delivery.
Customers are also being encouraged to check the USPS Service Alerts site for the latest information about mail deliveries and closures.
“We live and work in the communities we serve, and our thoughts are with everyone affected by this disaster,” said Mid-Carolinas District Manager Sandy Wyrick. “We are committed to making every delivery and offering retail services where it is safe so impacted customers can also focus on their recovery.”
USPS took extensive steps to prepare for Hurricane Matthew, which has caused billions of dollars in damage and claimed more than 40 lives.
