Employees who fail to identify or send phishing emails pose serious threats to the Postal Service’s information security, the CyberSafe at USPS team warns.
Phishing occurs when hackers use fraudulent emails to steal online passwords and other personal information. The emails can appear to come from a legitimate source, such as a financial institution, business or government agency.
The team advises employees to never share passwords or USPS credentials. Other tips:
- Be wary of emails from senders you don’t know.
- Be cautious of emails or calls requiring immediate action.
- Think before clicking links or opening attachments.
- Be on the lookout for misspellings or incorrect grammar use.
- If an email doesn’t seem right, verify it.
The team also advises employees to be aware of insider threats — current or former employees who misuse authorized access to the organization’s network.
