Postal Service facilities throughout southern Louisiana are working to move the mail in the aftermath of this week’s historic flooding.
Rescue crews evacuated 20,000 residents from the floods and nearly 11,000 people are staying in emergency shelters.
Thousands of deliveries were interrupted in the disaster’s wake after several Post Offices were temporarily relocated to alternate locations.
“The Postal Service is resilient in our efforts to return normalcy to our customers and employees as quickly as possible,” said Louisiana District Manager Stephen Hardin.
“As soon as the water recedes and Post Offices are deemed safe for customers and employees, we will reopen them and deliver mail to residents and businesses that have been impacted by the flood.”
USPS is updating its Service Alerts page as Post Offices reopen.
Employees in affected areas are encouraged to use the national emergency hotline number — 888-363-7462 — to stay in touch.
The Postal Employees Relief Fund and Employee Assistance Program can provide assistance to employees who have suffered losses in the disaster.
