Those in need

New video highlights food drive recipients

People who rely on the food donations collected through Stamp Out Hunger discuss the drive’s importance in a new video.

“I had to flee domestic violence … me and my son,” one woman who receives food from a pantry in Fairfax, VA, says in the 5-minute segment.

Kirsten Bourne, director of marketing for Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, DC, says Stamp Out Hunger benefits a variety of individuals.

“There are a lot of stereotypes about who we serve. Some people think it’s the homeless population that needs these services. It’s actually working families,” she says.

Through Stamp Out Hunger, USPS employees collect food donations that are distributed to local pantries. The Postal Service and the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) sponsor the annual drive, which will be held Saturday, May 14, this year.

In addition to the video with food drive recipients, NALC has produced a brief public service announcement featuring actor Edward James Olmos.

The longer segment concludes with recipients expressing appreciation.

“To the letter carriers, I appreciate all of your help,” one man says. “To be able to go home and cook my own meal tonight is pretty awesome.”
