Famed actress and diplomat Shirley Temple became the 20th inductee in the Postal Service’s Legends of Hollywood stamp series April 18.
“This stamp serves as a lasting tribute to her legacy as a world-renowned actress and for her distinguished career in public service and international affairs,” said PMG Megan J. Brennan, who dedicated the stamp at a ceremony in Los Angeles.
Temple charmed a generation of Depression-era moviegoers and later served in several diplomatic posts through the early 1990s.
“We are so pleased at this … tribute to her extraordinary legacy and her almost magical life story, born of a genuine and optimistic personality, a strong work ethic and a heartfelt concern for the public good,” said Charles Black Jr., Temple’s son.
Other ceremony participants included USPS Board of Governors Chairman James H. Bilbray; Pavol Šepel’ák, counsel general of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles; Cheryl Boone Isaacs, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences; and Norman Eisen, formerly ambassador to the Czech Republic.
The stamp image is based on the 1935 movie “Curly Top,” one of Temple’s iconic films.
