Retailer weighs using PRS

Parcel Return Service allows customers to use USPS to return merchandise to retailers.

A large online retailer is testing Parcel Return Service (PRS) to determine if USPS should handle more shipments from customers who want to return the company’s merchandise.

During the test — which will be conducted in Florida — the retailer will evaluate the Postal Service’s ability to scan PRS shipments and stage them for pickup.

The company also will assess the time it takes to receive notifications when shipments are ready for pickup and loaded onto its vehicles.

“This is a huge deal for the Postal Service,” said New Products and Innovation VP Gary Reblin. “If the Postal Service executes PRS with this company, we’ll be securing the returns business for a top e-commerce retailer for the foreseeable future.”

The test is part of the Postal Service’s efforts to capture a larger share of the $3 billion returns market.

Businesses aren’t named in some stories to protect the Postal Service’s competitive advantage.
