Three Postal Service employees were honored last week for saving a co-worker’s life.
Springfield, MA, Network Distribution Center mail handlers Leonard Giannetti, Samantha Glazebrook and Amy DeLuca used an automated external defibrillator and performed CPR when Tractor Trailer Operator Michael Lussier fell ill last year.
The trio, who are members of the facility’s medical emergency response team, received tributes from Postal Service leaders, local firefighters and others at the Jan. 12 ceremony.
“The phrase ‘above and beyond the call of duty’ accurately describes the events that transpired,” said Mailing Requirements Clerk Philip Bissonnette, a safety team leader.
Glazebrook told a local TV station that she and her colleagues drew upon their extensive training during the incident.
“I don’t think we thought about it, we just got in there and did it,” Glazebrook said. “After it was over, we had time to think about it and that’s when the emotions started to come for us.”
Though Lussier doesn’t recall the incident, he told reporters he’s thankful to his co-workers.
“I appreciate every minute that goes by now,” Lussier said. “I don’t take anything for granted.”
