The Postal Service continues making investments for the future, including plans for new delivery vehicles, PMG Megan Brennan says in her latest video message.

Fifteen companies are competing to build the vehicles, which are slated to debut in 2017.

“These vehicles will be designed with increased cargo space and improved access to facilitate both the loading and the removal of packages and mail,” Brennan says. “It will also have improved overall safety features and better fuel economy.”

The PMG also discusses plans to complete the rollout of 225,000 Mobile Delivery Devices in the fall, along with new Retail Systems Software that better integrates with mobile Point of Sale (mPOS) devices and self-service kiosks.

Additionally, the PMG reports USPS is deploying 31 new small-package sorting machines, including 21 that will be up and running by the holidays.

“This will increase our processing capacity and improve overall efficiency,” she says.

Other topics include new incentives to encourage businesses to send mail, the Postal Service’s ongoing test of larger mailboxes that can accommodate bigger packages, and this year’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, which will be Saturday, May 9.
