The Postal Service dedicated stamps honoring Mexican artist Martín Ramírez during a ceremony in New York City March 26.
The pane of 20 self-adhesive stamps features notable drawings and collages from Ramírez (1895-1963), whose art blended the physical landscapes of Mexico with modern American popular culture.
“Our choice of Martin Ramírez as the subject of a Forever stamp sheet reflects the widespread — and growing — influence he has had on art in the United States, as well as on artists throughout the world,” said Chief Financial Officer Joe Corbett, who dedicated the stamps.
Ramírez joins Georgia O’Keefe, William H. Johnson, Frida Kahlo and other artists who’ve been honored with stamps.
Joining Corbett at the dedication ceremony were Sandra Fuentes-Berain, the consul general of Mexico in New York; Brooke Davis Anderson, executive director of arts organization Prospect New Orleans; New York magazine senior art critic Jerry Saltz; and Frank Maresca, whose gallery hosted the event.
The stamps can be purchased online and at Post Offices nationwide.
