Hiking through history

Boy Scouts follow the 1800s mail trail

More than 600 Boy Scouts recently hiked 35 miles to honor mail carriers who once braved weather and wildlife along the South Florida coast.

The scouts followed the footsteps of the “barefoot mailmen,” carriers who traveled a 68-mile route — mostly walking barefoot on the beach — to carry mail from Palm Beach to Miami in the late 1880s.

The scouts camped overnight and the following day delivered mail to Miami Customer Relations Coordinator Mirtha Uriarte, who stamped letters with a special cancellation to commemorate the hike.
